Keep Your Eyes on the Path

The soothing cool morning breezes disappear
Cast out by the sharp rays of the glaring sun
The pavement beneath me it begins to sear
But still brings enticements to everyone

Unsure of the direction of the path
I begin my journey with trepid steps
A shade lures me from the raging sunbath
Revealing the beautiful, but daunting depths

I think, “It’s good enough.  Time to turn back”
But I am directed to continue to walk
Hesitantly, I shuffle along the track
Fighting the temptation to give in and balk

Aware suddenly of a drastic drop
My heart skipped a beat, but I kept moving on
Averting my eyes and trying not to stop
I plead silently to have all my fears gone

“Keep your eyes on the path” my mind then speaks
Obediently, I walk and quietly pray
Slightly braver, I walk along the peaks
Following my eyes along the narrow way

What a wonderful display came to view
A world of color in an awesome expanse
As the scene dissolves into the sky’s blue
The grandeur entices me into a trance

In my enchantment these words came to me
“Keep walking in faith with your eyes on the path
Though dangerous and hard it appears to be,
And your eyes will see the glory God hath.”

Commentary:

Written as a result of an experience I had while visiting the Grand Canyon north rim.  I was with my dad and we were slowly progressing toward home, but decided to spend a few hours to visit.  We did the same thing in the winter years ago on the south rim--and that was cold!  There is a walking path to an overlook which was not a long walk, but there were some places on that walk that brought on the vertigo.  Height mixed with an incline are the main ingredients to get the vertigo going for me.  I even get nervous being high up in stadiums.  Having a pathway with both sides having an incline put me through a tremendous test.  There was one trick I learned years ago when I discovered my height issue, and that was instead of looking down to look at an object in front of me.  On this path the only certain thing dependable enough was the paved walkway, so I tried with all my strength to keep my eyes on the path to keep myself from getting too much vertigo.  It worked, and I made it out and back in one piece, and also being able to see some beautiful scenery as a reward.

I thought about the experience and made a relation to it and life, how scary things come our way all the time, but there is that one goal, that one vision, or that one purpose that is set before you.  It is dependable and unwavering.  When trials and difficulties arise, as the focus remains steady, it will pull you through those difficult times.  There will still be quite a bit of discomfort and much effort on your part, but on keeping that focus, the end is in sight.  The reward after going through it all is so beautiful that it is completely worth it.
