Hope

A darkness,
Stillness,
Rests upon the earth
As it turns its back
Toward the sun
And yet a light
Still shines
Reflecting the sun
To show us its presence
Surrounded by other small lights
Many guide us
Some send us into awe
And in time
We slowly begin to turn
Back
Toward the sun
And then before us
A glorious manifestation
As the first light of day
Begins to appear
Invigorating and inspiring
Enlightening
And life again is enlivened

Commentary:

This was inspired by the solar eclipse that was planned to occur a few days later on August 21, 2017.  I was barely out of the track, so I only got a partial view of it, but I had others I knew who lived in Idaho and saw their videos on social media as well as watched the footage from the local news media who traveled there to witness it.  I was working at the time and wasn't able to witness the whole thing, but what a great moment!  I wish I could see it in person, but I guess if I live 18 more years, I might have a better opportunity since the track goes directly over my present location, assuming my living quarters will still remain local and my eyes will still function well enough.

This poem shares the same title as another I wrote earlier, because I really have a "thing" about hope.  I compared this event to the truth that despite the darkness, the light of hope still exists.  It goes along with my motto that I have carried with me since I was in college, "The sun still shines on a rainy day."  That was a reminder for me to remember that even on days when I can't see it, hope hasn't died.  It's still there waiting for its moment of revelation.

No matter how dark the day seems, there is a light somewhere not too far away.  Keep on living.  Keep trying.  Don't give up, and one day you'll slowly see that glimmer of hope begin to emerge from its hiding place until it's a full blown blinding light.
