I look to the trees,
Their branches outspread,
And think of that heart
That extended to me
As the songs of the birds,
In their sweet welcoming tune,
It speaks to me,
And comforts my soul.
It brings to memory,
From past to present,
A most harmonious sound,
A cheerful voice.
As the breeze that gently flows by,
Tossing a lock of hair,
Which tickles my cheek,
It gives me a sense of joy.
Similarly flows the gentle breath
That circulates within the ear,
As sweet quiet words are spoken,
Paired with a warm embrace
While the clouds drift by,
I watch their patient movement,
Covering and uncovering the sun,
And reflect on the wonders of life
In all its glory it shines,
like the sun in the sky,
Reminding me of life's divinity,
A glorious radiating light and warmth.
Even while hardships dim its light,
It seems to come, then disappear,
And yet it has not,
For life continues on.
Though the darkness forges on,
Dimming the view of the path ahead,
Bright day always follows in its tread,
And behold, what wondrous views!
Fortunate to experience this repetition,
Our hearts walking side by side,
Supporting each other,
Along this portion of our path.
The time will come, it always does,
When our paths must part for a time,
But in time, we'll join again,
Embracing each other as family and friend.
Commentary:
I've come across a lot of poetry I've been scribbling out in my notebook, but apparently didn't feel like they were ready to share. This is one of the older ones in the collection, and I've fixed whatever didn't seem to come out right while I wrote it, at least I hope I fixed it. This was probably written during the summer of 2022, long enough ago that I'm not sure if this was specifically inspired by something, or if I was trying to do a writing exercise.
Needless to say, with all of the deaths I've surrounded by since July last year (current count is two childhood neighbors, one aunt, one parent, and one cousin), I'm quite sure that I've been thinking a lot about life since then. I'm always happy and grateful that I've been able to have all of these people play a part in my life. It truly was a privilege knowing them and learning from them.
