Valentine Limerick

Today, I saw the words, "Be Mine"
On the cheesiest Valentine
What made me sick
He called me, "Chick"
With sappy words on every line

Commentary:

When I was in college taking an English class, one of the assignments in the class was to do a group presentation.  I don't remember exactly what the assignment was for that particular presentation.  I remember writing this poem and sharing it with the others.  They thought it was hilarious and wanted to use it for part of the presentation, but before we could give presentation, the professor had a serious health problem that cancelled it.  Another staff member or professor walked in and told us about it while we were waiting to give our presentations, and after he left, we had a discussion among ourselves and decided just to go ahead with class that day without the professor.

This particular poem is in Limerick format, which is often witty and silly in its format.  I tried it a few times in high school, but always felt like my poems were more outlandish than they should be.  It didn't really feel natural to me, so I don't write in Limerick that often.  It was approaching Valentine's Day when I wrote it, and I am always amused about how sickly cheesy some people make the holiday, so this poem was written to make fun of it as well as express how I feel about sappy pick up lines.  Here's a clue: they don't work for me.

That being said, I also don't really approve of some people's alternative name of, "Single Awareness Day," either.  It all has to do with the focus, so even though I'm not falling for those ridiculous pickup lines, I'm also not falling for the idea that this should be the worst day in my life, simply because I don't have someone to give me flowers or a romantic evening meal.  There's much more to life than that.
