I Do

The heavy dark clouds above
Weigh down upon the mountains
The burden of moisture exceeds their strength
Leaking raindrops toward the thirsty earth
Releasing an aroma of fresh wet vegetation

Temptation beckoned me to the shelter
Almost I succumbed
Instead I walked
Small raindrops found their way under my umbrella
Kissed my cheeks
As I turned a corner
My heart broke out into song
As the clouds above
It exceeded capacity
And escaped into the open air

A moment of silence

Again a song came out
“…Lord, remember me…”
As quietly as a whisper
Yet piercing deep into my heart
Came the answer
That mingled the raindrops and tears

                                                                                     “I do.”

Commentary:

This poem is a result of a moment I experienced one morning as I was going to work.  It was one of many mornings when a song was running through my mind, one of those ear worms that come up every once in a while (on an side note, most ear worms I get don't bother me.  They're usually songs that I feel connected to).  There was one point during the travel that I ended up being outside in the rain and there weren't a lot of people around, so I started singing out a little, and as I got to a particular part of the song, which I mention in the poem, it suddenly struck me differently, and the words that came to me became the title.

It often seems like we wander through the world thinking we are all alone, and I am guilty of feeling this way also.  It's a great burden to feel alone, to feel like no one is listening and no one is supporting you.  Isn't it wonderful to know that whether or not there are people around you cheering you on, that you still have someone there to help you every step of the way, and that one someone actually has the power to help you?  Beautiful thought.
