The Painted Canvas

I look up to the sky and take one more step
The pure blue hue watches over me
My progression grows slower as the path slopes
There is a strain in my legs and some labored breathing
Is this all worth it, the effort I’m making?
A moment or two a voice speaks to me,
“You’ve gone far enough, time to go back.”
I’m left with a decision to listen or ignore,
But ahead of me, I see a milestone
It renews my hope for things to come
I press on, dragging my feet along
I am closer, ever closer
To my side, I catch a glimpse of the view,
A hint of beauty appearing and disappearing
It inspires me and helps me along
I’ve reached the point.  My goal is in sight!
Pressing on, I have forgotten the pain
My eyes are now focused on the finish line,
And the view begins to expand before me
I turn, and what wonders came to view!
Spread out as a painted canvas across a board
The expanse of the valley is presented before me
As I look on, awed and inspired
There is beauty here that I would have never seen
Had I followed the voice and turned back.

Commentary:

I love to take walks.  Where I currently live, there are plenty of places for a walk.  There is a park nearby with walkways.  There is also a school nearby where the track is available to the public after school hours.  I was also introduced several years ago by my sister a little trail that went along the creek near the school also that is lined by trees, and gives a wonderful sample of a natural setting.  One of my most favorite places to walk is in a nearby neighborhood that is located at the base of the nearest mountain.  It is only a ten to fifteen minute walk away from where I live.  I love to walk up there and enjoy the overlook it provides for the valley.  They are building houses up there that are blocking the view a little, but there are places that are not being sold yet for housing that provide great overlooks.  The view overlooks the entire valley, and it's an amazing sight to view.  I also love the views I get there of the surrounding mountains, especially of the ones on the south side.

The point of this poem is not particularly to express how amazing nature is, though it is that.  It is an expression of staying hopeful and pursuing good goals despite the challenges that may get in the way, a pursuit of happiness, you might say.  Through the work and effort of it all, the beauty of it all will open up, and perhaps even turn out more amazing than expected.  It's all worth it in the end.
