How many daily mornings do I wake up and hear
The melodic calls of the birds flying near?
And quickly forgetting to be thankful and say
I'm exceedingly glad that I hear them today.
How many times do I look at the bloomed flowers
Opened in glowing brilliance during sunshine hours,
Forgetting to admire their ever valiant stance
Appreciating their adorned visual expanse?
How many times do I take that simple bite of bread
Wishing for more varieties of flavor instead,
Not realizing in my own ignorant way,
To feel the gratitude that I should have this day!
How many times to I walk past the lilac tree
Allowing the scent to infiltrate within me,
Dismissing granting its sweet fragrance to uplift
Letting the joy provide me a blissful gift!
How many times do I touch that velvety leaf
Gliding against my skin in a moment so brief?
Unaware of sensations it placidly sends
Radiating power that such a touch expends.
So many times I have been unable to see
The beautiful blessings life has given to me!
Commentary:
This is a second poem I wrote last week. The first one was previously posted. I wrote this with the intention of focusing on being grateful for the 5 basic senses. I attempted this also in the AABB pattern, with the exception of the last two lines, which breaks away from the four line format in the rest of the poem for emphasis. I also made the choice to use lilac as a tree instead of a bush, which is more common around my parts to keep the rhyme.
I've been acutely aware of things, even before the virus took over, that so many of us don't realize we've been blessed with. It makes me wonder about how many things we do each day that we don't realize is a blessing in our life?
